Newmarket Holidays / Olympia Christmas River Cruise

Newmarket Holidays have spent the past thirty years putting together some of the very best value-for-money holidays for their customers. Each of the carefully selected Newmarket Holidays includes the services of a tour manager throughout the duration of the trip to ensure everything runs smoothly and a number of included and optional  excursions to allow travellers to experience and appreciate the very best that their chosen destination has to offer, as well as plenty of free time for exploration or relaxation. This Christmas, Newmarket Holidays are offering a festive period with a difference, with a five-day cruise holiday down the picturesque Rhine taking place from December 23rd until December 27th.

Newmarket HolidaysThe Olympia Christmas River Cruise begins with coach travel from a variety of selected UK pick-up points to the ship docked in Boppard, the ‘Jewel of the Rhine’. Guests will be able to explore the historic town with its Roman fort and beautiful architecture before boarding ship in time for a welcome buffet. Early on Christmas Eve the Olympia sets sail, heading down the Rhine towards Rudesheim and passing many wondrous sights along the way, including the Lorelei, where legend has it that sirens used to wait on the rocks to lure sailors to a deadly end. Travellers are invited to spend time discovering Rudesheim, or take part in an optional excursion to a wine tasting before returning to ship for a Christmas Eve dinner.

Christmas Day itself, the Olympia sails into Cologne for a short stop and then on into Konigswinter, where guests are invited to stretch their legs and view two of the most delightful cities on the banks of the Rhine. A traditional Christmas dinner is served in the evening, followed by drinks and dancing to live music to finish off the day. Boxing Day takes in several more picturesque towns and the option to attend a further wine tasting at Cochem, before returning to the Olympia for the final evening. On 27th December, travellers disembark and set off on the coach journey home, following a magical and unusual Christmas which will be remembered fondly for years to come.

Activities and dining on the Olympia cruise ship | Newmarket Holidays

The cruises arranged by Newmarket Holidays are ideal for those who want a truly memorable break. The cruise manager creates a programme of activities for each day of the holiday, and there will usually be a number of optional excursions that you can go on, if you so choose. Most passengers like to spend at least a few hours relaxing in the lounge and bar area of the ship. Here, they can chat with their fellow passengers, curl up in a chair and read a good book, play a game of cards or simply sit back and bask in the beautiful scenery.

While the atmosphere in the lounge is very relaxed and informal during the day, at night this area becomes a more glamorous space, with the crew and a professional pianist providing some sophisticated, fun entertainment. After dinner, if you’re feeling energetic, you can even take to the dance floor with your travelling companion. Although the lounge is the perfect spot for some cosy card games or reading during the day, the top deck of the cruise ship is the best place for sun worshippers and sightseers. Equipped with outdoor chairs and sun loungers, it’s a lovely place to soak up the sun and get some fresh air.

Newmarket HolidaysFood lovers will adore these holidays; many say that the dining experience on this cruise is one of the highlights of their trip. The sumptuous food, attentive waiting staff and crisp white linen tablecloths make for a wonderful meal. The food itself is a combination of traditional British fare, international dishes and regional specialities, all of which are carefully prepared by professional chefs, and served in relaxed, comfortable surroundings. There is no dress code for the evening meals, but guests are welcome to dress up if they feel inclined to do so. Breakfasts and lunches are equally enjoyable, with the former made up of a generous buffet that includes hot dishes, as well as cereals, pastries, breads and jams, and the latter of light main dishes and a salad buffet.

While all of the dinners served on the Newmarket Holidays cruises are delicious, the Welcome Party and Farewell events include a particularly decadent four-course meal. You’ll have the chance to sample some of the local dishes, as well as a number of locally brewed wines, beers and brandies.
